STANZA at Fairy Lake

Active Living vs. a Retirement Home: What's the Difference?

For many people, the next chapter of life isn't about slowing down. It's about having more freedom to decide how you spend your time, where you live, who you spend time with and what you want the years ahead to look like.

STANZA at Fairy Lake

Traditional retirement living and the emerging idea of active living can serve different needs and different preferences.

The distinction often begins with the question being asked.

Retirement living may focus on:

What support might I need?

Active living begins somewhere else:

How do I want to live?

That question is at the heart of what we're exploring with STANZA at Fairy Lake.

One community, two residential chapters: The Summit Muskoka offers move in ready homes at Fairy Lake today; STANZA Residences is the next chapter, now being shaped through early input.

Active Living Starts With Independence

At STANZA, the vision begins with something familiar:

Your own home.

STANZA Residences are being envisioned as privately owned residences designed around independent living, including single level layouts and elevator access.

But the residence is only one part of the idea.

The broader STANZA concept explores how your home could connect naturally to wellness, movement, social experiences, nature and community without giving up the independence that comes with having a place of your own.

We think about that lifestyle through four simple ideas:

LIVE WELL · STAY WELL · MOVE WELL · CONNECT WELL

Together, they represent a different way of thinking about what the next chapter could look like.

LIVE WELL

Living well starts with having a place that feels like yours.

A private residence. Your own routines. Your own space. The ability to have friends and family over and live independently.

For some people, the next chapter may also mean simplifying.

Less maintenance. Fewer stairs. A home designed around the way you want to live today rather than the house you may have needed twenty years ago.

The goal isn't to give up independence.

It's to design around it.

STAY WELL

Wellness can become more important as we get older, but that doesn't mean it needs to define where we live.

STANZA is exploring how wellness resources could be incorporated naturally into the community.

That could include areas such as preventative wellness, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, health education and access to wellness professionals.

Exactly what that looks like has not been finalized.

And that's intentional.

We want wellness to be available without making the community feel clinical or institutional.

It should support your life, not become the centre of it.

MOVE WELL

One of the advantages of creating a community in Muskoka is that movement doesn't have to mean going to a gym.

It can mean walking.

Hiking.

Paddling.

Gardening.

Exploring a trail.

Spending an afternoon outside.

Or simply having places around you that make movement part of everyday life.

STANZA is being imagined around the idea that movement, nature and wellness should work together.

Keep moving. Keep exploring. Keep doing what you love.

CONNECT WELL

You can own a beautiful home almost anywhere.

What is harder to create is belonging.

That's why connection is such an important part of the STANZA concept.

We're exploring spaces and experiences that could bring people together naturally: dining, coffee, cooking, art, music, learning, outdoor activities, community events and simple places to meet.

Participation doesn't have to mean giving up privacy.

The idea is to make connection available when you want it.

Because an independent life doesn't have to be an isolated one.

So How Is That Different From a Retirement Home?

Traditional retirement residences generally combine accommodation with services and varying levels of support, depending on the community and the needs of its residents.

That model can be the right choice for many people.

STANZA is exploring something different.

The starting point is ownership and independent living, supported by a broader lifestyle community.

It isn't about telling people how to retire.

In fact, we don't think retirement alone is a particularly useful way to define this stage of life.

Someone may still be working.

Someone else may travel for months at a time.

Another person may want to golf, paddle, volunteer, start a new business, spend more time with grandchildren or finally have time for things they've put off for years.

Different people want different things.

The common thread is having the freedom to choose.

Why Fairy Lake?

Place matters.

STANZA at Fairy Lake is being envisioned within the landscape and four season lifestyle that make Huntsville and Muskoka different.

Nature isn't something we need to manufacture as an amenity here.

It's already outside the door.

The opportunity is to create residences and a community that allow people to enjoy that setting while remaining connected to Huntsville and the conveniences of year round living.

We're Listening Before We Finalize It

This may be one of the most important parts of what we're doing right now:

STANZA isn't finished yet.

Before deciding exactly what the residences, amenities, membership and wellness offering should include, we want to hear from the people who might actually live here.

Would you use a fitness or wellness space?

Would you value organized activities or prefer informal gathering places?

How important are trails and outdoor experiences?

What would make a membership worthwhile to you?

What would you use every week rather than once a year?

What would you not want to pay for?

Those answers matter.

Rather than building a long list of amenities because they look good in a brochure, we want to understand what people would genuinely value.

Help Shape What Comes Next

STANZA Residences are being envisioned as the next residential chapter at Fairy Lake.

Before the homes, shared spaces, membership and experiences are finalized, we're listening.

If independent living, ownership, wellness, nature and community sound closer to the future you imagine for yourself, we'd like to hear from you.
